Join Alan S. Hejnal, Data Quality Manager, Office of Advancement at the Smithsonian Institution, as he presents on "Gift Receipting". This live webinar will take place on January 11, 2018 at 2:00pm EST with an estimated duration of 75 minutes.

Gift Receipting is subject to a surprising number of IRS requirements.  There’s the Written Acknowledgment Requirement, the Written Disclosure Requirement, and the Record-Keeping Requirement for Cash Gifts, not to mention Forms 8283 and 8282 for Noncash Gifts, the tricky 1098-C for gifts of motor vehicles, and special rules for qualified charitable distributions from IRAs.  We’ll review all the details of what you need to do—and not do—to meet your donors’ needs and protect your organization.

Learning Objectives:

  • Become familiar with the full range of tax code provisions and IRS regulations that govern gift receipting, and understand the issues that the various requirements are intended to address
  • Understand what organizations need to do—and should not do!—to provide compliant receipts and related documents that both meet the needs of donors and protect the organization, with attention to special cases with special requirements
  • Summarize what a standard receipt needs to include to comply with both the Written Acknowledgment and Written Disclosure requirements

About the Presenter:

Alan S. Hejnal, an Advancement Services Professional over 30 years and a member of the AASP Committee on Best Practices in Records Management, has designed Gift Receipting processes at more educational institutions than he cares to recall (although it’s not part of his portfolio at the Smithsonian!).
