Whose money is this? Gift Processing with Third Parties Involved

Presenter: Maureen Trafford

Third party giving vehicles are growing faster than weeds in good loam.  Learn the common ways they operate and the key words to help you determine how best to book the donation.  Also learn when to call and what words to use to help you get to the bottom of it all.  You’ll come away confident of when you can book to your constituent vs. the third party.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review definitions of common third party to donor relationships.
  • Learn the tax structure of the common third party entities and how that impacts compliance.
  • Learn when you can book to the donor, when to book to the third party and when to call.

Maureen Trafford is the Advancement Services Director at Smith College, with a particular focus on compliance, data access, data integrity, and operational improvement projects leveraging technology. Prior to Smith College, Maureen worked at the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, where among other tasks she oversaw the donor advised fund program.
